Warehouse Management

The Warehouse Management (WM) module provides flexible functionality to manage the whole range of warehouse processes. It allows for the optimisation of movements in the warehouse such as inbound stock receipt and put-away; internal movements such as replenishment; and physical Inventory and outbound processes such as wave planning, picking, stock issuing, staging and packing.

The warehouse management system also includes functionality to support WM master data and stocks within the warehouse complex, allowing all goods movements and internal warehouse processes to be efficiently automated and inventory accurately tracked in any warehouse location.

Integration

The Warehouse Management module is a fully integrated component of the SAP Enterprise software (ERP/ECC) and is therefore fully integrated into the business scenarios in the following areas:

  • Materials and Inventory Management
  • Sales
  • Warehouse Management
  • Transportation Planning
  • Handling Unit Management
  • Project Systems
  • Foreign Trade
  • EH&S Dangerous Good Management

The Logistics Execution and Warehouse Management platform can also be run as an independent instance, to form the basis of a decentralised implementation which communicates back to the ERP system through near real time messages (IDOCs). This approach is frequently used for warehouse and logistics solutions where high performance for mobile devices and/or automation and high availability for 24x7 operations is necessary.

The Warehouse Management System includes interfaces for the integration of external systems and warehouse automation.

Warehouse Management functionality can be expanded by the Extended Warehouse Management features delivered by the SAP Logistic Extension Sets. These, in conjunction with WM, allow more advanced material flows to be mapped and implemented. The Logistic Extension sets enable functionality such as Task & Resource Management, Cross Docking, Yard Management and Value Added Services (VAS).

Mobilising Warehouse Management

Mobilisation of logistics processes, in particular warehouse processes, can bring significant benefits to a business in terms of throughput, accuracy and efficiency. SAP provides native support for warehouse and yard Radio Frequency (RF) devices for mobile data entry and barcode scanning as well as voice directed operations. This is achieved through standard elements of the SAP landscape:

  • SAPConsole
    Text based devices
  • WebSAPConsole
For graphical, touch screen and voice devices
  • ITS Mobile
The replacement for SAPConsole and WebSAPConsole in later releases of SAP Enterprise Core Component (ECC)

In addition Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) enablement of logistics processes is possible directly from SAP with the Auto-ID toolsets.

Logistics execution activities can also be mobilised to occasionally connected devices, for example devices connecting over a mobile 3G/GPRS) network, using the SAP NetWeaver Mobile Infrastructure. Find out more about our Mobile Solutions.
